Suicide Prevention Awareness: Part 1

This week marks the beginning of a two-part series devoted to Suicide Prevention Awareness. With September recognized as Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, it’s important to begin the conversation now. Talking about suicide can feel difficult, but opening up early helps reduce stigma and creates space for hope and healing.

Why Start the Conversation Early?

Suicide is not just a statistic — it impacts families, workplaces, and communities in very real ways. By raising awareness now, we can:

  • Recognize warning signs sooner

  • Offer support to those who may be struggling

  • Remind ourselves and others that connection can save lives

Small Steps You Can Take This Week

Even gentle, everyday actions can make a difference:

  • Check in with a friend or loved one you haven’t spoken to in a while

  • Listen without judgment when someone shares their struggles

  • Share resources or supportive messages online

  • Learn the numbers and hotlines available in your area

These small acts create ripples of compassion that reach farther than we may realize.

Looking Ahead

Next weekend (August 31), we’ll continue this series with Part 2, where we’ll share practical resources, protective factors, and ways to take part in Suicide Prevention Awareness Month.

📌 If you or someone you know is in crisis, help is available. Call or text 988 to connect with the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. You are not alone.
